ROTARY IS:

Founded in 1905, Rotary is a worldwide organization of 1.2 million members in 35,000 Rotary clubs of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help to build peace and goodwill around the world. The organization’s motto is: “Service Above Self.”

CLUB MISSION:

The Palo Alto/University Club (PAUR) was founded in 1988 by a group of Stanford faculty and staff plus a variety of local community leaders. We offer fellowship, networking, inspiring educational programs, and meaningful youth, community, environmental, and international service projects. Our speakers hail from a broad spectrum of professionals, artists, civic leaders, journalists, authors, entrepreneurs, and scientists.

WHAT WE DO:

We are a diverse, curious, passionate membership focused on making life better for human beings around the globe and the betterment of the environment. We are Millennials, Gen Xers, Gen Yers, Baby Boomers, and the Greatest Generation! We are
serious about service above self. We unite and take action to better our world, our community and ourselves. We believe in projects that disrupt the status quo and bring new ideas to serve humanity better.

LOCAL/GLOBAL SERVICE PROJECTS:

BooksPlus promotes early childhood literacy amongst Pre-K through 3rd grade students in under-resourced communities; Civil Discourse promotes programs and services that improve and advance constructive engagement across political divides;
Environmental Impact Committee (EIC) devotes focused attention to environmental concerns, particularly the climate crisis; International has a history of service in El Salvador dating back to 2004 – the committee provides support in education, health, and economic development; Youth Services recognizes the positive change that youth and young adults can have through leadership development activities, involvement in community service projects, and programs that enrich and foster world peace and cultural understanding; Vocational works on local mentor programs, intern programs, Rotarian Personal Board of Directors and maintains a member professional skills, hobbies and extra-curricular interest; Community Service works with the Social

Committee and Youth Service to offer PAUR members the opportunity to put into action the Rotary motto “Service Above Self.”

MEMBER DEMOGRAPHICS - CLUB PEOPLE OF ACTION:

Among the first clubs to warmly welcome women into Rotary, we are proud to say that women make up over 40% of the membership. We have active members from all over the world, and members speak English, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. We also consider ourselves a young club, both in age and spirit, with members ranging in age from 23 to 101.

AUDIENCE DEMOGRAPHICS:

Our members are committed to service, to the ideals of Rotary, and to each other. We have a strong connection with the Palo Alto community, contributing to the health and education of both the young and the old. In addition, we reach beyond our community
to positively impact the health, education, and economic well-being of our friends living in Caluco, El Salvador.

CLUB REFERENCE:

We are a breakfast club that meets on Fridays at 7:30am at the Sheraton Hotel on El Camino Real and University Avenue in Palo Alto, CA.
